Review: The Ocean Course at Hokuala

For our fifth round in Kauai with local friend and blogger, Wayne Halm, we visited the Ocean Course at Hokuala. The course is formerly known as Kauai Lagoons, but was renamed after Timbers Resorts took it over from the Marriott. The front nine starts out with a very open feel to it over the first several holes, but don't be fooled, Jack always has a few tricks up his sleeve, and doesn't let you feel calm for very long. The 76.2 course rating and 142 slope from the back tees back up that claim fairly well...

Top 10 Golf Courses of 2016

Our Top 10 Courses of 2015 set the bar extremely high, but 2016 was no slouch. We started and ended the year in Hawaii by visiting Maui in January and Kauai in December. Both islands have spectacular golf and are strongly represented on this list. Despite what some major publications want you to think, ranking golf courses is always subjective (and sometimes political). After much contemplation, here are my top 10 golf courses played in 2016:

Poipu Bay Golf Course 16th hole

Review: Poipu Bay Golf Course

Poipu Bay Golf Course is located along Kauai's famous sunny south shore, adjacent to the Grand Hyatt Resort. It was our 4th round of golf on Kauai with local golf blogger, Wayne Halm. Conveniently for us, Poipu Bay was only a short 5 minute drive along the south shore from our accommodations at Koloa Landing Resort. If you're wondering why the name Poipu Bay is ringing a bell, this might be why:

Wailua golf course kauai 17

Wailua Golf Course – not your average muni

For the 3rd round of our Kauai golf adventure with Wayne Halm, we visited Wailua Golf Course. Wailua is a municipal golf course located along the eastern shore of Kauai, approximately 30 minutes from our south shore accommodations at Koloa Landing Resort. Wailua is a course which helps debunk a common misconception of golf in Hawaii - that you have to pay big bucks to play good golf...

Makai Golf Club – “toward the ocean”

Makai Golf Club is located along Kauai's north shore in the Princeville area. Makai is a Hawaiian word roughly meaning "toward the ocean", which turns out to be a very appropriate name for this golf course. Upon arrival at the Makai bag drop there was no mistaking that it's a high end establishment. We were welcomed with a warm aloha spirit and immediately felt relaxed there...

Maui Nui Golf Club Review

Review: Maui Nui Golf Club

Maui Nui Golf Club, as the name suggests, is located on the beautiful Hawaiian island of Maui. It is conveniently located in the town of Kihei, a popular area for vacation condo rentals. It was five minutes up the road from our condo, which made it dangerously convenient. One of the first selling points of Maui Nui is that it is one of the few courses on Maui that can be played for under $100...

Pukalani Country Club Review

Review: Pukalani Country Club

Pukalani Country Club sits 1,100 feet above sea level along the lower portion of Mount Haleakala on the beautiful Hawaiian island of Maui. This location makes for interesting terrain and beautiful vistas. Pukalani was the first round of golf on our Maui trip, and quickly debunked the notion that golf in Hawaii is too expensive. The down-to-earth, 6900 yard layout provides plenty of unique, fun, and challenging holes...

Manele Golf Course Review

Review: Manele Golf Course

Manele Golf Course is located on the beautifully quaint Hawaiian island of Lanai, just west of Maui. The Jack Nicklaus designed golf course is perched along lava outcroppings well above the crashing surf, which provides amazing views of the Pacific Ocean and Lanai's rugged terrain. One of the biggest challenges is not to get distracted by the views. On the other hand, being distracted by them is worth it, because they're that good ...
