New season, fresh look…and more giveaways!

I’ve been slightly quieter on the blog and social media in 2017, but it’s not because I haven’t been doing things. Besides making sure I don’t get fired from my day job, I’ve had a few things cookin’ behind the scenes at Golf is Mental that are now taking shape.

I worked with graphic designer Tommy D of TD Logo Design to come up with a logo. By “worked with” I mean Tommy took my super vague yet demanding instructions of “simple, memorable, not a cheesy cartoon, has to look good in any color, any size, and must look good embroidered on hats”, and turned it into with something real.

My default logo is green but I have a bunch of different colors to use for different situations, and the small circle and middle ‘G’ may even migrate off on their own for an appearance or two. The logo is intended to be a chameleon.

Tommy actually got this logo to me a while ago. He turned it around really quickly after only a few iterations, but I insisted on waiting to use it until I got….HATS!

So roughly 173 google searches later, 89 emails, calls to Toronto, Los Angeles and the Philippines, reviewing embroidery proofs, editing them, then rejecting them, then deciding I need to switch and go with someone else who does more detailed work, I finally settled on something I had faith in…and at last I got hats!

Hats!

I’m going to start hosting hat giveaways during every big golf tournament — majors, The Players, WGCs, and maybe even my own Club Championships because, why not? It’ll be a “guess the winner” and win a hat sort of deal, so watch out for those on social media. I will also be doing some other random giveaways here and there, so if you don’t already follow me on social media, better jump in so you don’t miss one.

With a new logo will also come a fresh new look on the site and social media. So the next time you see someone ranting that mallet putters aren’t real putters, this image probably won’t be far away:

In addition to that I’ve been working on lining up more super smart and important guests for my new written interview series, A Casual 9. The first two episodes have been a hit so far and brought in some interesting and fresh perspectives, so I’m excited to see what the future holds with that.

Other than that, we’re getting geared up for golf season here and excited for a bit of travel over the summer, including some local trips in the works and a brief stint in Toronto for a wedding where we’ll have the splendid opportunity to play a couple of the best private clubs in Canada — Magna Golf Club and St. George’s Golf and Country Club — with Beth’s Aunt and Uncle. Can’t wait for that!

Hope your 2017 season is off to a great start, and if you’re so inclined, leave a comment and let us know what you’re up to or excited for this season.

Happy golfing!

Josh

  2. A golf clap to the design team at Golf is Mental (ok…to you!). Love the new look. Hats look quite snappy too. I’ll understand if you’re schedule won’t allow it, but if there’s time to tee it up while in Toronto that would be wonderful. I know you’d likely bring the sticks but I have a mallet putter I could happily lend you! 🙂

    Cheers, Mike.

    1. Hey Mike,

Thanks buddy. Teeing it up with you in Toronto has def been on my radar but I am unsure whether we’ll have time with making the most of family time over there, but I’ll keep you posted!

And yes, I assumed you’d probably have an extra mallet putter to spare from your shrine 😉

      Cheers
      Josh

      1. Hi Josh,
I understand, I know how busy and compressed wedding visits can be. Still, you’re hitting two stout and very prestigious courses while here. I have not played them but hear wonderful things. I am more then confident we will find time to tee it up again. Cheers my friend, Mike
