Pukalani Country Club sits 1,100 feet above sea level along the lower portion of Mount Haleakala on the beautiful Hawaiian island of Maui. This location makes for interesting terrain and impressive vistas.
Pukalani was the first round of golf on our Maui trip, and quickly debunked the notion that golf in Hawaii is too expensive. The current going rate is $89 including a cart, which provides some of the best value on the island. There is a full driving range and a putting green conveniently located close to the first tee to get you prepared for the round ahead.
The down-to-earth, 6900 yard layout provides plenty of unique, fun, and challenging holes. Pukalani Country Club strikes an elegant balance between playability and challenge.
The approach to the par-5 2nd hole:
Beth getting ready to challenge the canyon of the par-3 3rd hole:
The tree-lined fairways are wide enough to give everyone a fair chance to keep it in play — even us rusty Canadians managed to find a few fairways. Straying off the fairway will be penalizing, but you are likely to find your golf ball and have a fair chance at a recovery shot.
The greens are fairly large and deceptively sloped, and I had a few 3-putts to prove it. They are well protected by bunkers and contours, but still remain accessible for most players.
Looking back on the par-5 5th green:
The variety of holes kept us excited and eagerly awaiting the next challenge — canyons, elevation changes, doglegs, hazards, and many risk-reward options await.

The downhill, par-4 10th hole:
I loved the par 3’s at Pukalani. They varied in length from short to long, provided a variety of challenges, and were framed nicely.

I love a great value course, and Pukalani Country Club was just what the doctor ordered to get our golf adventures on Maui underway. Although I will always remember Pukalani as the first round of golf I ever played in Hawaii, it would have stood strong as a fun and challenging golf experience regardless of where it fell in our itinerary.
The staff were extremely friendly and welcomed us as if we were local members. I enjoyed the laid back feel of Pukalani, which suited our vacation mindset nicely. The layout exceeded my expectations, and the lush green fairways were a nice treat. While the greens weren’t all immaculate, they were still good and rolled decently well.
If you’re headed to Maui on a budget, you don’t have to leave your clubs at home when you can play a course like Pukalani Country Club, which won the “Best Value Golf” accolade in Golf is Mental’s Best of Maui post.
Whether our budget is large or small, Pukalani Country Club will be a staple on our golf itinerary anytime we’re in Maui, and I recommend adding it to yours too.
