Golf is Mental Hits the Road #9 – Monterey Peninsula Part 1

As my avid readers already know, Beth and I dropped some exciting news a couple of weeks ago by announcing we secretly got married at the beginning of our stay in Monterey!

We’ve been overwhelmed with the outpouring of congratulatory gestures and support from family and friends. We couldn’t be happier to start our “official” journey together in a way that suited both of us, and what better place to do it than the Monterey Peninsula.

Our stay at Pebble Beach Resorts was nothing short of exquisite. The splurge was well worth it and I can’t say enough about the experience you get while staying at Pebble Beach – proper five-star treatment. The golf wasn’t too shabby either!

The cozy wood burning fireplace in our room at The Lodge:

Our view of the 1st tee at Pebble Beach. A lot of fun eating room service in the morning and watching the nervous golfers as they’re about to embark on their own Pebble Beach journey.

Beth and I on the 3rd hole at Spyglass Hill:

We also enjoyed some great ocean views at The Links at Spanish Bay, albeit some wild greens!

After our stay at the Pebble Beach Resort, we made the 10 minute trek to the quaint yet happening community of Pacific Grove where we’ve been renting a condo. Our original plan was to stay till February 18th, but we just extended our stay here until Sunday the 22nd as we ended up with a few extra days after mapping out the remainder of our journey up the coast.

We’ve been keeping active. Not so active to account for all the happy hours and gluttonous dinners, but enough to make us feel less guilty about it.

We’ve continued playing some golf in the area. The Monterey Peninsula has a wide array of options from world-class courses that will leave your wallet feeling weak and afraid, to some great value-golf that will keep you coming back.

The 3rd hole at Bayonet, the most brutally tough yet fair (and reasonably priced) course I’ve played to date:

The 3rd hole at Nicklaus Club Monterey. A private club with a challenging layout and beautiful views. Thanks to my good friend Brett and his Dad Logan for setting us up there!

A look at the 13th green at Pacific Grove Golf Links. The best $46 you can spend to walk an ocean view golf course:

In our early morning round at Pacific Grove Golf Links today we had to take a timeout on the 12th fairway to do some whale watching. Pretty unique experience to whale watch with a golf bag on your shoulders.

We also took in some professional golf at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. We saw the likes of Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth, Brandt Snedeker, Jim Furyk and Billy Horschel. Along with celebrities Bill Murray, Wayne Gretzky, Jake Owen and Chris O’Donnell.

We’ve also been enjoying some morning jogs/walks along the ocean. We’ve even become pretty good friends with the seals and sea otters who are also regulars along the coastline of Pacific Grove.

Throw in some wine tasting in the Carmel Valley, a day at the Pebble Beach Spa (thanks to Beth’s parents!), a trip to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and some relaxing on our ocean view balcony and we’re officially ruined to have any chance of being excited to return to the Alberta prairies!

It’s hard to put into words how incredible the adventure has been so far, and how grateful we are to have the opportunity. Being able to share it with my new wife, who is also my best friend, almost feels like cheating the system.

Life is too short not to be doing something awesome.
